New York investigates energy drinks for false claims

The Attorney General points to PepsiCo, maker of AMP and Monster Beverage, producer of 5-hour Beverage. Both companies each received notifications last July.

New York is known as the city that never sleeps, but it seems that from now New Yorkers will have to find new ways to stay awake away from energy drinks. If in May, Mayor Michael Bloomberg began his own crusade against sale of sugary soft drinks in large restaurants or cinemas thus causing panic in an industry that generates billions of dollars in the U.S., now its f ISCAL general, AG Schneiderman , is investigating the manufacturers of energy drinks by the potential use of false-claims relating to the ingredients used and the nutritional values, for consumption, as confirmed to this newspaper sources related to this research. Companies like PepsiCo (AMP ) or Monster Beverage (5-Hour Energy ) both received subpoenas in July mainly related advertising activities. “The investigation is at an early stage,” added the sources.

Manufacturers of these products claim that drinks, sweet taste normally include vitamin B, taurine and caffeine. “The key ingredients in 5-Hour Energy is included in daily meals we had, like broccoli, avocados, bananas or apples, or even are in yourself. It contains zero sugar and a cup of coffee the best you can find. A chute without subsequent low energy “, recites Monster Beverage Company (5-Hour Energy) on its website.

Usually not indicated the exact amount of caffeine in these products. Investigators are examining whether the companies highlighted an alarming its benefits while assessing the role of caffeine in these drinks. “Large doses of this product, most often combined with exotic ingredients and fuzzy-like guarana, make it necessary to ensure the safety of such beverages for consumption by children and adolescents,” demanded the last April National Institute of Health USA.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics last April concluded that these products are consumed by more than 30% of adolescents and young adults. “These drinks usually contain large amounts of caffeine causing serious adverse effects, especially in the sector of the population, such as dizziness, diabetes, heart diseases or behavioral disorders,” concluded the research. The latest data collected by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the abuse of caffeine in the U.S. in 2007, claimed that the 5448 overdose cases reported, 46% were younger than 19 years.

Energy drinks in the U.S.

Energy drinks are gaining strength in the U.S., some products sold in gas stations, drugstores and airports have vending machines located throughout the country’s geography. Their regulation in the U.S. has more gaps than other soft drinks like coke. In 2009, the U.S. Drug Agency (FDA, for its acronym in English) said he was “concerned” about certain ingredients in these beverages, such as herbal extracts made artificially. Even the Federal Agency says the “term energy drink” is not defined by the FDA.

In 2011, the U.S. consultancy Mintel estimated that energy drinks moved more than 8,000 million, which represented an increase of 16% over the previous year-carbonated beverages grew normal only 12%, says the newspaper The Wall Street Journal -. Mintel then projected that this market will grow by 92% in the span of time between the years 2011 to 2016 due to innovation in these products and the relatively young industry. “Energy drinks accelerate its growth,” said U.S. page, beverage-digest.com . According to this page, Monster Beverage sales leader in the U.S., ahead of the Austrian company Red Bull.

The debt crisis slows growth in Germany in the second quarter

The Ministry of Finance warns that progress in the second half of the year will be moderated.

The German Ministry of Finance has advanced on Friday that the growth of Europe’s largest economy has slowed in the second quarter and the outlook for the second half of the year are a step forward “moderate.”According to the monthly report released this department for the month of July, the GDP growth was below the 0.5% rise recorded between January and March.

Without giving specific figures, the Ministry justified its warning in recent declines in industrial production and weakening business confidence that has been caused by the worsening of the crisis in the eurozone. “The overall picture of the indicators indicates a moderate development of gross domestic product (GDP) for the rest of the year,” it said.

Domestic demand, “the most important support for economic growth in Germany” today, and the gentle but constant rise of the occupation will continue to maintain the pulse of growth in Germany, argues the text. This partially offset the collapse of exports, the traditional mainstay of the German economy, and the “weakening of the export dynamics” provided by the Ministry of Finance for the rest of the year. In addition, the monthly report indicates that the Ministry of Finance expects that industrial activity in Germany remains a “quiet walk” in the second half of 2012.

Finally, the department heads Schäuble Wolfwang relaxation values of inflation, which in June fell back slightly in Europe’s largest economy.“The price climate in Germany has further reassured” because of the withdrawal of the global economic situation, reasoned the document.

A survey of analysts by Reuters suggests that GDP will grow by 0.2% in the second and third quarter and by 0.3% in the last three months of the year. So far, Germany has remained largely immune to the problems of the euro zone and the bloc has helped to avoid recession with expansion of 0.5% in the beginning of the year.
